Top-notch toy cars have prices to match

Granted, not all die-cast cars are diamonds in the toy box. Still, some
that you paid a buck for today could be worth a bunch tomorrow. Consider
these rare dandies, based on values from the Standard Catalog of Die-Cast
Vehicles.
Volkswagen Beach Bomb rear-loading prototype, 1969, reportedly sold
for $72,000. According to the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los
Angeles, where it's displayed, collector Bruce Pascal paid more than
$70,000 for this rare pink prototype that never sold in stores. Standard
Catalog values the rear-loading Bomb at $7,000 in near-mint condition,
while The Hot Wheels Source (clubdiecast.com) cites prices from $12,000
to $15,000. Standard Catalog values the more common minibus from '69,
with side-mounted surfboards, at $400 in mint condition in package.
Custom T-Bird, 1969, $5,000 mint condition in package. The mirror
finish reflects the mammoth value of this Johnny Lightning classic. A
Custom T-Bird from '69 with opening doors goes for $475, while a
sealed-door version should fetch $800.
Ford Fairlane (148), 1962-66, $700 mint condition in package.
It's the rare South African issue, bright blue version by Dinky that
fetches the higher price tag. The pale green version pales in comparison
at only $200.
Batmobile (267-A1), 1966, $550 mint condition in package. Holy
vehicle appreciation, Batman! This particular Batmobile by Corgi is
valued so highly because of its rare matte black finish and missing tow
hook.
